Eczema

What is Eczema (Dermatitis)?

Eczema, also known as ‘atopic eczema’ or ‘atopic dermatitis’, is a skin allergy/condition causing inflammation and intense irritation. Eczema symptoms tend to be caused by dry skin.

Skin that is affected by eczema, gets sore and broken when it is scratched. It can look wet and may bleed. Scratching is hard to avoid since the main distressing symptom of eczema is unbearable itching, but once the skin gets broken and cracked, infections can set in, causing even more discomfort.

Atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis) is the most common form of eczema, a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked.

Atopic eczema is more common in children, often developing before their first birthday. However, it may also develop for the first time in adults.

It’s usually a long-term (chronic) condition, although it can improve significantly, or even clear completely, in some children as they get older.

Understanding Eczema

Eczema is generally used to refer many different types of skin conditions. However in most of the cases, it refers to a popular skin disease called atopic dermatitis.

The symptoms are dry, red and itchy rash, scratching which can cause it exudates and crust over. If you scratch over it severely, the skin can get darken or thicken in colour.

Studies showed that 1 in every 10 kids developed eczema in which most included infants (as 90% of them get it before age 5).

In most of the cases when they turned to teens, they found themselves escaped from eczema flare-ups. And few of them who continued to suffer from eczema seem to had modest symptoms.

In very rare cases, eczema develops in adulthood and if developed can be treated easily.

Some Statistics

With a life time prevalence of 15-30% in children and 2-10% in adults, the incidence of AE has increased by two- to threefold in industrialized countries during the past three decades (Pawankar R, et al, 2013)

In 45% of children, the onset of Atopic Eczema occurs during the first 6 months of life; during
the first year 60% of these children are affected, and 85% are affected before the age of five (Pawankar R, et al, 2013)

What causes Eczema?

The exact cause of atopic eczema is unknown, but it’s clear it is not down to one single thing. Atopic eczema often occurs in people who get allergies, hay fever or asthma – “atopic” means sensitivity to allergens.

It can run in families, and often develops alongside other conditions, such as asthma, allergy and hay fever.

The symptoms of atopic eczema often have certain triggers, such as soaps, detergents, stress and the weather. Sometimes food allergies can play a part, especially in young children with severe eczema.

You may be asked to keep a food diary to try to determine whether a specific food makes your symptoms worse. Allergy tests aren’t usually needed, although they’re sometimes helpful in identifying whether a food allergy may be triggering symptoms.

Atopic eczema is likely to be caused by a combination of things.

People with atopic eczema often have very dry skin because their skin is unable to retain much moisture. This dryness may make the skin more likely to react to certain triggers, causing it to become red and itchy.

You may be born with an increased likelihood of developing atopic eczema because of the genes you inherit from your parents.

Research has shown children who have one or both parents with atopic eczema, or who have other siblings with eczema, are more likely to develop it themselves.

Atopic eczema isn’t infectious, so it can’t be passed on through close contact.

Types of Eczema

There are many types of eczema and dermatitis:

  • Atopic Eczema / Atopic Dermatitis
  • Discoid Eczema
  • Contact Dermatitis

Specifically, atopy, or being atopic, means having a genetic tendency for your immune system to make increased levels of IgE antibodies to certain allergens. An atopic individual is likely to have more than one allergic condition during their lifetime, such as eczema, asthma, hay fever or food allergy.

Other types of eczema

Eczema is the name for a group of skin conditions that cause dry, irritated skin. Other types of eczema include:

discoid eczema – a type of eczema that occurs in circular or oval patches on the skin

contact dermatitis – a type of eczema that occurs when the body comes into contact with a particular substance

varicose eczema – a type of eczema that most often affects the lower legs and is caused by problems with the flow of blood through the leg veins

seborrhoeic eczema – a type of eczema where red, scaly patches develop on the sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears and scalp

dyshidrotic eczema (pompholyx) – a type of eczema that causes tiny blisters to erupt across the palms of the hands
